Want To Fly Your Drone? Well, You May Need An Approval From The DCA
Got a new drone for your birthday? Well, you need to think twice before taking it out for a spin.
The New Straits Times reports that drone users who want to fly their expensive toy are required to get approval from the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).DCA director-general Datuk Seri Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told the daily that the regulation, which reportedly came into effect in April last year, was introduced to prevent the public from misusing their drones.
When flown in crowded areas, drones could threaten public safety, Azharuddin said, and those equipped with cameras can be used as a surveillance tool.
Therefore, it is important for the authorities to keep track of drone usage, he added.
However, here's the good news; not all drones are required to get a permit to operate. Only drones weighing more than 20kg are required to get an approval from the DCA.
So that tiny little drone you bought just to spy on your hot neighbour? Probably good to go.
However, even if you got a permit from the DCA, there are still a couple of rules you need to adhere to, Azharuddin told NST.
First, drone users are prohibited from flying 400 feet above the earth’s surface. They are also not allowed to take-off or land within 50 metres from a group of people.
Flying a drone into designated no-fly zones such as police stations, the Parliament building, Putrajaya and airports is a big no-no.
If you violate any of these rules, you could be fined up to RM50,000 or sentenced to a three-year jail term, Azharuddin warned.
They did not mention anything about using drones to spy on your hot neighbour though...
