SHAH ALAM: The upcoming UPSR results announcement on Thursday will not mention the top-achieving school nor make comparisons between districts.

Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon said this was to reduce the emphasis on exams.

He added that the National Education Blueprint’s main aim is to deemphasise on exams and wants parents, teachers and even the media to understand that education is also important to ensure students get enough extra-curricular activities in schools and learning beyond exams.

Chong also said students could obtain co-curricular points by joining competitions organised by ministry-accredited societies such as the KL KSK.

“This has to be a registered society, and all they have to do is to submit full details to the ministry. If your information is complete, you can be accredited faster by the ministry for student participation,” he said.

He added that participating in activities like lion dances could be put under the “sports” co-curricular activity and would benefit students later when applying for university placement.

On the topic of Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) English textbooks for the new academic year, Chong said the textbooks would be imported and used for the entire year.

“According to the European Framework, this will be implemented for one to two years, and the ministry will publish its own books afterwards,” said Chong.

He added that both CEFR and the Primary School Standard Curriculum (KSSR) textbooks would be used, with the latter as supplements.

He also said that the elite classes often became the main focus of the school, garnering most of the school’s teaching efforts and resources.

“This is the result of the emphasis on exam results, where the aim is to achieve good results during exams and fame for the school to become elite,” Chong said after attending the launch of the Kuala Lumpur Kun Seng Keng (KL KSK) Lion and Dragon Dance Association’s new cultural centre in Shah Alam.

He was asked to comment on policy regarding elite classes in schools.

Chong said instructions to stop segregating classrooms as elite and normal from next year were issued by the Federal Territories Education director.

“Other education departments have not issued similar instructions,” Chong said during the press conference.
